Interview @ Folk å Rock, Wednesday

Posted by rogr on October 29, 2006

Two girls, 21 and 23 year old. Are visiting the café in the record store, mainly to have a coffée. But they like the idea of having the oppurtunity to check records at the same time.

- Finds out about new music through friends recommendations.
- Finds out about new music through music magazines.
- Finds out about new music through programs for concerts.
- One of the girls like swedish music especially, since she then can understand the expression of the artist better. It is also cheaper to go to concerts with swedish bands.
- Both girls use MiniDiscs as portabel music players.
- Would like to pay for music, but they see it as a double thing, would like to support small companies and the bands they like very much – but not big record companies.
- One of the girls keeps a book where she takes notes on bands she wants to check out.
- Listens to portable music when travelling (by train), biking (although one of them considers it as dangerous with respect to the traffic) and while walking.
- They listen to music mainly at home, through their computers with connected speakers.
- Type of music dependes on mood and occasion, for example Coldplay when studying.
- There is a shuffle on the minidisc, but one of them doesn’t use it. Although she shuffles on her computer.
- They plan ahead what they are going to listen to. One of the girls have different discs of music that contains music for different occassions, for example – going to sleep.
These discs are not updated very often.
- They go to concerts mainly for the music.
- If they go to a party and doesn’t like the music, they will try to change it.
- They don’t organize their cd’s extensively, they are “in a mess” – but they are able to find what they are looking for.
- When listening to music, they often think of someone that they would like to recommend the song to.
- One of the girls were listening to music alot while working this summer.
- Music is used as a background most of the time. Music is for example good to listen to while cooking.

Interview with Librarians@Malmö StadsBibliotek

Posted by fibi on October 29, 2006

Interview with two librarians.

Why do people come here?

- To borrow cd’s, since it’s free.

What’s most popular to borrow?

- Sound effects are especially important, world music is also popular.

Who borrows at the library?

- Many older customers, but many people come here and take a look.
- You can also listen to music in the library, by borrowing headphones.

What do people ask the librarians?

- Most common question is, “where is that record?”
- Also, “do you have something fitting for a party?”

How does the demo section work?

- They come with their demos, anyone can bring one there.
- Where kind of popular when it started out, has been around for 2 years, there are 72 demos in the collection.

What other systems are around?

- Librarians mention that there will be a national demo database for libraries on the internet. Vellinge (a neighbour city) is probably connected to this network, but Malmö library is not.

- In denmark there is a cooperation called “Libraries Netmusic” (https://www.bibliotekernesnetmusik.dk/netmusik2006/?org=775100) from which customers may borrow music through the internet.

- Media Jukeboxes are currently developed, with these you can take home different media files from the library.

- Web2.0 has turned out as Library2.0 in the library setting. Google this for more information.

Why was the demo section most popular in the beginning?

- Well, look at the world.. You can find out many bands on MySpace for example, says the librarian!
