Methods:
* Site visits & Interviews
- High school (Mediagymnasium for 15-19 year olds, made 3 inteviews with 5 people there).
- Record store (Folk å Rock, with a cafe. Made 3 interviews with 4 people at two different
occassions, one weekday and a saturday when there was a record signing event with a local
band).
- Library music & media room (talking to 2 librarians).
- Home setting (interview with 2 guys just under 30 years of age).
* Internet research
Aspects:
1. Finding out about new music
* Friends, definetly the most important and mentioned aspect, meetings, talking on the net,
exchange of media, talking, parties.
* Radio and TV is mentioned by some
* Magazines, posters and concert adds are mentioned by 2 + 1 people (atleast)
* Music association
2. Accessing music
* Downloading and sharing is the most popular way to access new music.
* Filesharing may be both legal and illegal. Much music is freely distributed.
* Illegal downloading is something that is not completely natural to all,
some are embaressed.
* For the young adults, the way to access music has changed, previously
they would buy cd’s and vinyl records but nowadays they mostly download.
* Some people mention the physical touch – a quality that is not avaliable in
files.
* Librarians say that people go there to get to touch and browse in a physical
setting, they say that mainly older people.
* A attitude found in some of the interviewees is that they would like to support musicians,
although they want to select who to support. For example they would like to support their
favorite bands, or small record companies/less know musicians. One interviewee doesn’t want
to support the distributors.
* People visiting the record signing event that we talked to all knew the band from before
(in person).
* Radio and Tv is mentioned as something that brings out music (detail this)
3. Sharing music
* Previously, one of the interviewees shared music through mixtapes.
* Ways to share music today -
* Bluetooth – mainly used by the teenagers at school
* MSN/ICQ – both are used, MSN more popular among the teenagers.
* Burned CD-collections of music files
* “When you hear some music, you get to think of someone and want them to hear it”
* No one mentions borrowing
4. Patterns of consuming music
* Different kinds of music are used for different situations and moods
* Music is used both at work/School, at home, in-between situations
* Some people use different kinds of music for occassions
* Music is most often in the background, not in the focus of attention
* Music is very important and social, take examples from David & Michael and school girl
for this.
* People look for new music and new experiences
5. Technology
* Mp3 players
* Computers at home (everyone seems to use this)
* Cell phones with mp3-capability
* Mini Discs (young students, say they don’t have the money to buy new equipment)
* No one mentions stereo, except one that use the stereo with his vinyl player.
6. Attitudes towards local music
* Only one of the interviewees listens especially to local music.
* Local music is not in the focus of interest
* Concerts is one of the aspects of local music somehow..
